Toshiba Satellite 5205-S703 Power Jack Issues

Recently a Toshiba 5205-S703 laptop came in for repair. This one would not power on. Our free diagnostics revealed that this machine had a bad power pin on the back. We used our laptop power jack repair service to repair the jack. $149 and the unit was DONE.

Toshiba 1005-S157 No Display LCD Problem

A Toshiba Satellite 1005-S15 laptop recently came in for a backlight repair.

During our free diagnostic we discovered that the inverter was bad. This is normally good news but this time it wasn't. This Toshiba had been at a shop in California where they attempted to install an inverter that was for a Compaq laptop. When doing this they modified the LCD cable. Not only was it a mess, it didn't work!!!

This unit ended up here for a while. We try to turn them around as fast as possible; 2 - 4 days is the norm, but this one liked us and stayed for a while... About 6 weeks. The laptop is a rare model and finding the correct inverter for it was difficult. It turns out the vendors selling parts for this model had all copied each other's (bad) information (this happens a lot) and everyone was listing a part # for an inverter that was supposed to work in the 1005-S157 but it was completely incorrect (we determinded this once the wrong inverter arrived... twice). We contacted a (special) source who gave us the correct inverter information. Once we obtained the correct inverter we needed to find an LCD cable that was not damaged. By the time that came in about 6 weeks had passed.

The laptop is finally done and ready for more action once again.

Thanks to our customer for thei patience..

MacBook Pro with no display

A MacBook Pro came in this week. This one had no display. We call these MBPs. You could barely see what was going on in the background and he wanted his backlight replaced. He originally found us for our backlight repair service.

Note: We have a Backlight FAQ here.

Anyways, we checked it out and this one had a ad inverter. The inverter was ordered and installed. Most of our inverters are $149 installed here. Our customer was thrilled; he was worried his machine was done for. The unit was only 14mos old.

Toshiba P15 DVD problems

This week a Toshiba P15 with DVD problems came in. Our local customer found us as a last resort for his excellent laptop.

Initially the hard drive went bad. The owner tried to install the OS on the laptop but the optical drive was not working. The P15 came with a DVD+RW drive. The customer went to a small shop on Capital Blvd here in Raleigh. We won't mention names but it is important to note that this particular shop is now starting to advertise laptop repair. =( Anyways, they sold him a DVD drive out of an IBM laptop which didn't fit very well. That drive didn't work. Our customer was unhappy and when he asked for an explanation they told him he could try to flash his BIOS at home but that his motherboard was bad. He told them the DVD drive was useless to him if the motherboard was bad and they told him he could not return the drive. WOW, what absolutely horrible advice terrible customer service.

Bummed out, the customer went home, did some research and found out that we specialize in laptop repair. He dropped his laptop off for a free diagnostic. 2 days later we called him to tell him the DVD drive worked, the other shop had been installing their own drive incorrectly. He had us properly install the drive and his OS and drivers. His invoice was under $100.

We also informed him that we had if he brought in his old DVD+RW that we would replace it with one (in stock). This would restore the DVD recording functionality and bring the machine back to it's stock appearance rather than having a mismatched ThinkPad drive that doesn't record sticking out of it. He plans on trying to get a refund from the other shop and coming back.

Another happy local customer.

We're not out to bash other stores- we just want to explain the difference here- we've repaired thousands and thousands of laptops over the last several years. When it comes to certain repairs the inexperienced computer technician (and sometimes even the manufacturer) will misinform- we hear the same story here every single day. It is very unfortunate.
