We have fixed a couple of these Dell XPS M140 laptop computers already with problems such as a failed motherboard. The prices on them fluctuate. The last one that was here for a motherboard replacement had a repair bill ended right around $400.
For the most part, a XPS M140 is also known as a Dell Inspiron 630m.

HP DV8000 Laptop Problems Cured.

One of our clients who owns several HP DV8000 laptops recently had a few units in. One of them would not install Windows. His IT staff had informed him that he needed a new motherboard. He called us up and got a uote on the replacement motherboard and dropped the unit off. As it was signed in we mentioned that we would do our free diagnostic and order a motherboard for the machine if needed. Most of our HP motherboards come in brand new; new motherboards for HP laptops such as the DV8000 can be hard to obtain at a reasonable price.
Anyways, for this particular machine we needed to use one of our own hard drives for troubleshooting. Sure enough, the machine would crash during the Windows install. It would ask for a file which was supposedly missing from the install CD. Naturally we attempted a second CD and tested the unit with a new DVD drive. Still no go. Finally we tested the machine out using different memory. Ta da! The unit installed Windows perfectly. Our client’s laptop was cured for under a hundred bucks. He had been expecting to sink $600 into the machine!

ThinkPad Laptops are Rugged.

We get asked a lot of questions about laptops and which models are “rugged”. This is best answered by this article. Attached is a pic from the article which shows a ThinkPad that has been through a torture test. In our opinion the T series is the best all around laptop out there. The article also talks about the Panasonic Toughbook. It is well worth a read for any laptop owner.

Acer buys Gateway
Tuesday, August 28, 2007
In an attempt to boost its global presence, Acer is purchasing Gateway.
One of our customers just mentioned this. We double checked online, and yes, it is true. Apparently Acer shelled out over $700m for Gateway! Time will tell if this was a good deal or not. At first glance it is pretty scary though...

DELL XP M1210 Notebook Repair
Tuesday, August 07, 2007

A Dell XPS M1210 laptop came in for repair this week. The machine had a bad motherboard.
We were able to locate a board for it for $599 installed.
Our customer had received quotes from the manufacturer and two other stores before getting his unit repaired here. =)
We’re backed up at the moment and the unit ended up being here for approximately a week and a half. That isn’t bad though, some parts take time to get; this particular board came from overseas and had a minimum shipping time of 5 business days.
The pricing and lead time is due to the machine being so new. It was just over a year old and not many parts are available for it yet. But, as the machines come out of warranty we’ll be seeing more parts available and prices dropping on them.

StyleNote M570U Laptop Repair

StyleNote Laptop Repair.
We had a StyleNote come in this week. An M570U to be exact. The M570U is also known as a Clevo or a Sager laptop.
This particular laptop was here for a power jack repair.
Taking it apart took a little longer than anticipated- our customer had attempted his own repair- many of the screws were stripped, missing or misplaced. Near the power jack area there was a large “puddle” of solder. The laptop motherboard had sustained damage and we were unable to repair it. We can repair 99% of the units that come in for a power jack problem, however, this one had other damage besides the jack.
