The Census Bureau's unacceptable loss of laptops and information.
Friday, September 22, 2006
New came out last night that the Census Bureau has lost over 1,100 laptops over the last 5 years, many of which contained personal information.
This is totally unacceptable!
What IDIOT put ANY personal information on a laptop to begin with? I just can't put into words how ridiculous this is. It must be a cover up, nobody could possibly be that stupid. Honestly, this makes no sense at all.
I do NOT believe the laptops were accidentally lost or stolen.

New recycling options in Raleigh
Thursday, September 21, 2006
In today's news there is a story about a recycling company that now has a shredder. The company is producing more jobs and can shred an impressive amount of electronics. They have plans to turn certain plastics into diesel fuel in the future.
It is great and they will probably do well, but, they charge for the service. There are local companies who will pay for this scrap such as TT&E. So, it will be interesting to see how this "pans out"... They do offer a service of destroying data but that already exists in the area and what IT dept can't remove hard drives before recycling?
To us it is a little confusing at first but it is great to see more recycling options in the area as a LOT of electronics waste is produced in the Raleigh area.

Toshiba Battery Recall
Just released by Toshiba today, the Toshiba Battery Exchange Program is now in effect.
It covers certain machines manufactured between March and May of 2006. The affected batteries simply quit working. Toshiba is offering to replace affected batteries with new batteries, free of charge.
Is this news? Two things.
1. We’ve seen this problem with batteries for years.
2. The affected machines were just manufactured- if the battery quits they’re already under warranty anyways.
I guess it is a “recall” since Toshiba will replace affected batteries whether or not they have actually failed. No explosions that we’re aware of- these batteries just die.
Affected models include:
Satellite A100/A105
Satellite M50/M55
Satellite M100/M105
Tecra A6
Tecra A7
