IBM ThinkPad X31 LCD

An IBM ThinkPad X31 came in this week. This one had a cracked LCD. Someone tripped over the power cord. The X31 was jerked off of a table and crashed to the ground, landing on the LCD lid.

We were able to obtain a brand new LCD for this ThinkPad at a fraction of the price IBM sells it for. After getting the owner's consent, the LCD arrived in a couple of days and the X31 was running like new again.

Dell Inspiron X200 Repair

A Dell Inspiron X200 came in for repair this week. It wasn't able to read PCMCIA cards. The owner needed the PCMCIA port working correctly.

The laptop needed a new motherboard. We were able to obtain one for around $199. Once installed, the laptop was up and running like new again.

The Dell X200 motherboard has an integrated 800Mhz processor. It is a very lightweight machine. The optical drive is located on a docking station. It isa neat little laptop.

Acer Aspire 3000 LCD Repair

An Acer Aspire 3000 laptop came in for repair this week. The laptop was in the passenger seat of the owner's car. A quick stop and the laptop bounced off of the floor.

The LCD had several lines in it making the unit unusable. Our free diagnostic concluded the LCD was damaged. This Acer Aspire 3000 had Acer's "crystal Brite" 15.4" WXGA (widescreen) LCD. The LCD is very nice, glossy and bright.

We were able to offer a brand new replacement LCD for $349. Installation service charges were an hour or less. The Acer was up and running in just a few days.

The Aspire was a nice laptop powered by an AMD Mobile Sempron processor. It weighed in at around 6lbs. It seemed like a nice laptop for the price they go for.

Bad power connector on your laptop?

Daily people are contacting us to find out if we will repair a bad power connector on their laptop. The answer is YES.

We just set up an entire page that describes our laptop power jack repair services:
http://www.absoluteraleigh.com/power_jack_repair.html

We offer this service to save people time and money.

Many people send their laptop back to the manufacturer for diagnostics. They think if they built they can fix it the best. This sounds like common sense, unfortunately, it is simply not true. Most laptop manufacturers did NOT build your laptop, they simply marketed it. When it comes in for something simple (like a broken power jack) they are not equipped to handle the repair or will charge you an unreasonable amount. Lately we've been hearing about quotes in the $500 - $800 range. We do the jack repair here for $149 in a fraction of the time.

Acer Travelmate 2600 Repair

An Acer Travelmate 2600 came in for repair this week with no display. It had been through the geeksquad. (Uh oh!) We can’t say anything bad about them here, however, we can note that to date we haven’t heard anything good about them.

It is a company laptop that they use every day. The ‘geeks’ took it in and charged the customer $60 to diagnose it. They then shipped it off to an unknown location for a period of 6 weeks. It came back in labeled “unrepairable.” Knowing that this was simply not true, they started looking around for someone that knows what they’re doing, which is how they found us.

It had some loose components. We simply had to reseat some components inside of the laptop. No parts were even needed, except for the keyboard! It appears one of the geeks actually broke it when they attempted to take it apart. Unfortunately, we see this too often. The keyboard was $99 and the labor was $120.

So, 5 days and about $200 later the company’s $2300 laptop was up and running again.

Multiple Vulnerabilities in Mozilla Products

Technical Cyber Security Alert TA06-038A

Too many people often state that Mozilla products (eg: FireFox) is much safer than Internet Explorer. This is true, in a way. This is simply because IE is much more popular (at the moment). Vulnerabilities exist for both (all?) browsers. IE is targeted more often simply because the malicious code/software payload will be more effective/widespread.

Anyhow, this vulnerability information was just released to the public today. It is nothing major that a simple update won't fix.
