Following up to the previous posts...

It seems Cisco didn't like Michael Lynn's speach. They went to the courts for an injunction to keep him from speaking.

Cisco IOS Security Hole

July 26, 2005: Michael Lynn quits his job with ISS before disclosing the flaw at Black Hat Briefings. He decided to speak now, he said, because the source code for Cisco IOS was recently stolen for the second time. According to Lynn, he had permission from ISS and Cisco to speak about the security hole at the Black Hat Briefings going on this week in Las Vegas but then the companies changed their mind and threated to sue him.

IOS is the software that runs Cisco routers, which routes data for large networks and the nation's Internet infrastructure.

While a patch was released in April 2005, it is easy to see that since Cisco has had the IOS source code swiped from them on multiple occasions it has most likely been taken for malicious purposes.

Keeping things like this secret is not a good idea and thankfully someone took a step forward.

Dell Inspiron 2600

A Dell Inspiron 2600 came in for repair this week. It was getting BSOD (bluescreens) and making an occasional clicking noise. A hard drive test confirmed the original 30GB hard drive was bad. We replaced the dead drive with a new one.

Our customer had some important information on the drive. We were able to recover the data from the failing drive and transfer it to the new drive and import it back into her applications. The Inspiron is now baack up and running again.

Dell 8100 Repair

Another Dell 8100 laptop came in for repair this week. This one was in two pieces when it was dropped off. The entire LCD lid assembly was broken right off of the laptop. The hinges were broken and the LCD cable was ripped. About half of the keys were missing.

We stock most 8100 parts here and we were able to repair this one fairly quickly at an affordable price.

Alienware Area 51 Overheat Repair

This week we had an Alienware Area 51 laptop come in. This laptop was very impressive. A couple of the technicians played Quake 3 on it for hours making sure that the overheat problem was fixed... =)

The customer had been fed up with the laptop shutting off. It would run Win32 apps just fine but when you went to play a game such a Q3 the laptop would go zap and just shut right off. Alienware had sent the user a new video card and tried to help him but the unit continued to shut off. Then it came here.

Right off the bat it appeared to be a bad motherboard or an overheat problem. We cleaned the unit out and made sure everything was correctly seated. Between the CPU and the heatsink there was a little metal sheet to xfer heat that had become "bad." It was very dry and we could instantly tell that it was not doing its job. Often in laptops, a piece is there for a reason. In this case, the sheet was removed and a very thin layer of heat xfer paste was applied and the heatsink was firmly put back into place.

After a cople of hours of playing Quake 3, we determined the problem was heat related and that the laptop was totally repaired.

It sounds easy enough but this unit did exhibit problems similar to a bad motherboard.

An accurate diagnosis is essential here.

IBM ThinkPad A30: No Power

A ThinkPad A30 laptop came in for repair this week. This one had no power. You would plug in the power cord and nothing happened at all. It was an A30, type # 26523BU.

We happened to have 1 board in stock for the A30. Pricing varies but this board was $269.

One more laptop all fixed up.

Dimension 4600

Quite a few desktop PCs came in this week. The latest was a Dimension 4600 that would not turn on. It is getting a new motherboard. While it is here it is being upgraded from 256MB to 768MB of RAM.

It is a fast, P4 2.8Ghz HT machine but Dell sold it w/ only 256MB which was a real bottleneck. The user complained of it running slowly.

We'll have it up to par shortly.

ThinkPad T22 26478EG

A ThinkPad T22 came in this week w/ a cracked LCD. This one is type # 26478EG. (Same as 26478EU.)

Replacement LCDs are in stock for this model. The used ones are currently $119. We replaced the LCD and did a little memory upgrade and this unit is ready for action again.

Dell 5100 Laptop Repair from Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill, NC- Another Dell laptop came in for repair today from Chapel Hill.

More and more college students bring their laptops here for repair. We offer affordable repairs and a quick turnaround, which helps a lot when you're a student that needs to have your papers in ASAP.

Today the laptop in for repair happened to be a Dell Inspiron 5100. This one was overheating and shutting down. We can not always do it but this one will be back in the student's hands within 24hrs. It was overheating and to protect itself from frying it would just, poof, turn off. (It is a great feature but from what we hear writing a paper on a laptop that shuts off every 15 minutes is not fun.)

The unit needed to be disassembled, cleaned out, and put back together. Dust had been clogging all of the exhaust vents, fans, etc. Instead of the heat being blown out, it was trapped inside, bringing the laptop to dangerous temperatures.

This laptop came in for repair just in time. Too much overheating will kill it, just like a car.

Dell Inspiron 8100: Load fans

This week another Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop came in. This one had "loud fans."

The 8100 has dual exhaust fans on it. One had seized, the other was very loud and running very hard trying to keep the unit cool. We happened to have one fan assembly in stock and installed it. The LCD and motherboard have to come out of this model to get the fans in, so it wasn't the quickest repair we have done but so many 8100s have been through here it was still a speedy repair.

Dell Inspiron 8200

A Dell Inspiron 8200 came in not powering on earlier. This one needed a new motherboard. We happened to have one left in stock. They go for around $300.

One more laptop repaired and out the door!

Sony Vaio PCG-GRV670: Shut down problem

A Sony Vaio PCG-GRV670 passed through here this week. It was shutting down unexpectedly. There are various shut down problems associated with the PCG series. We get in quite a few GRV670 & GRV680 laptops.

This one was filled with dust. Dust was clogging the exhaust vents. The fans were not clogged but were very dusty. A can of air will not fix this. The laptop must come apart. Usually when the CPU fan is removed there are layers of dust between the fan and the exhaust fins which can not be seen from the outside of the laptop. Depending on model, sometimes the LCD needs to be removed in order to thoroughly clean out the system.

ThinkPad R32: Broken Power Jack

An IBM ThinkPad R32 came in for repair this week. A decent model, 1.8Ghz, type # 2658J3U.

This one had a broken power jack and was wireless upgradeable. We were able to replace the DC jack. The customer also purchased a miniPCI WiFi card which we installed. Wihle we were inside we took care of the dust build up that was in the fans and on the top and bottom of the system board.

This R32 is ready for action again! It is now a little cooler, quieter and quicker- with the new 802.11b internal wireless installed it is ready for any hotspot. Best of all, with the new power jack installed, this laptop will no longer be shutting off unexpectedly.

Gateway 5350: No Display

A Gateway 5350 laptop came in for repair. This one had no display.

The motherboard, LCD cable and LCD inverter checked out ok, leaving us with a laptop needing an LCD. We were able to find one at a decent enough price and this laptop is waiting for it's owner to come pick him up!

IBM T30 236697U

A nice IBM ThinkPad T30 came in for repair. It was a P4-M 2Ghz model, type # 236697U.

According to our customer, airport security accidentally banged it on someone else's luggage. This lid would no longer close and the front LCD bezel was not in tact all of the way.

This laptop got lucky. It just needed some plastic parts and a spring reseated. It came very close to getting a new LCD...

Paypal Crash 07-19-2005

We have a few online stores- one of them is unable to accept payments at the moment due to yet another paypal crash.

Will it be another major outage or just another temporary crash?

Not sure, but they're still down as of right now, 07-19-2005, 16:25 PST.

They have been doing fair since the major crash of October '04.

IBM ThinkPad T21 26474BU

A ThinkPad T21 (26474BU) came in this week.

This one had taken a fall. The lid was cracked and the LCD was cracked. All parts were in stock. We replaced both the LCD and the lid.

Compaq Presario 1700T

A Compaq Presario 1700T hame in for repair this week.

It was not able to produce sound and was freezing up.

This one came with a 6.4GB hard drive from the factory which was bad.

A new 30GB drive fixed it right up. The sound problem was software related.

HP ZE1210 - broken power jack & more

An HP ZE1210 laptop came in for repair last week which is being wrapped up right now. This one was in rough shape.

The power jack was broken and the unit would shut off every 7-10 minutes. Our customer was still using it until finally there was no display.

We were able to solder on a new DC jack. The unit was shutting off due to overheating- the exhaust vents and CPU heatsink fins were clogged with dust, trapping in the hot air generated by the CPU. As for the LCD not turning on, the unit needed a new LCD inverter.

One more Hewlett Packard ready to go again.

Dell CPX Notebook: Keys not working

We had a Dell CPX come in this week. We checked it out today. Certain keys work not working such as the 8, the 0 and the arrow keys.

On some occasions this can be cause by the motherboard but this time it was just a keyboard. The keyboard was in stock and the notebook is ready to go back out the door for some more action.

Keyboards are usually cheap enough to justify on most notebooks...

IBM ThinkPad R31 2656BEU: No Display

An IBM ThinkPad R31 came in today. This one was type # 2656BEU. The LCD latches and the laptop had no display. It turns out the LCD Inverter was bad.

Overall the rest of the laptop was in good shape. We happened to have 1 inverter in stock for this unit and the laptop is up and running great again.

IBM ThinkPad T22 2647-8GU

This IBM ThinkPad T22 (Type # 2647-8GU) came in today with a cracked LCD.

Replacement LCDs are in stock and this one is back out the door.

T22 XGA LCDs go for $119 - $179.

An IBM ThinkPad R40 plays Basketball (2897-XX7)

An IBM ThinkPad R40 (Type # 2897-XX7) came in earlier. This one took a hard hit hard while someone was playing basketball (indoors). The basketball crushed the keyboard in and broke some keys.

Amazingly, the rest of the ThinkPad was ok.

Replacement keyboards are in stock for most ThinkPad laptops, including this one. We stock as much stuff as possible but can not stock everything.

Our customer was happy and said: "DUDE YOU'RE THE MAN!!!"

IBM ThinkPad T21 2647-87U

This unit was here becuase when you pressed the power button the hard drive light would blink once and the machine would not turn on.

This is a "common" problem with the T21. Please keep in mind that they are a great machine and rarely have problems although when we get them they are usually broken and this is an issue that we see quite a bit of.

A replacement system board solves this. We stock the boards and they're $99. The unit also had a cracked keyboard bezel (palmrest). The T21 palmrests are in stock and go for $39.

The unit is all set and ready for some more usage again.

IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T43 (2687-DDU) w/ 15"

We're just wrapping up a customer's IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T43. They upgraded to this machine from a very old Compaq desktop. Wow, what an upgrade! They also upgraded the T43 from factory specs w/ 1GB memory. This laptop is very fast. The unit was here because they wanted all of their old data imported to the new machine, all of their software loaded, their email addresses set up, etc.- basically they want a seemless transition from their old Compaq to their new ThinkPad. They drove in from Durham, NC. The customer was not able to find a computer store local to her that would satisfy her needs.

On to the T43. This one is a 2687-DDU. It is powered by a PM750 and has a 5400RPM 60GB Hard Drive. The LCD is a crystal clear 15" SXGA+ 1400x1050 TFT. For video we have an ATI Radeon X300 which exceeds her needs. A CD-RW/DVD-R Multi-Burner is the optical drive. Internal Intel 802.11a/b/g WiFi, a CDC 56K and 1GB LOM Ethernet take care of any connections flawlessly. Other features are UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro.

Typing on the ThinkPad is a joy as always and the new keyboard feels great underneath your fingers. Other software added to the unit included Adobe Photoshop, Quark, Office 2003 and more.

This machine was a joy to "work" on.

Satellite Imagery + Maps + Google Search = Google Earth

We were going to blog this sooner although the beta was not available for download until today.

Google Earth is here! http://earth.google.com Google Earth is free. Advanced versions with more features are available but I will let you read about them at their site. It is a broadband only application. This is the coolest software I have used in a while. I have been awaiting this. Google is going to go far with this. What an excellent idea.

This could be the next version of the phonebook. Google is great for searching things. Their large free resource is going to make them a fortune in advertising....

Anyways, Google Earth looks like a great project. After looking up some businesses I see that it will still be coordinating map address w/ it's satellite imagery although so far it has done an amazing job and I am thoroughly impressed.

BTW- right now I am sitting at 35 degrees 45' 39.68" N by 78 degrees 49' 13.63" W. Elevation 489'...

Technology is good (for now).

aegise5.dll error on a Compaq Presaio R3000

A Compaq Presario R3000 came in today. It was running Windows XP and had an aegise5.dll error on it.

The Broadcom driver was ok however a second Broadcom application was installed (forgot the name- maybe Broadcom control panel). The second software needed to be uninstalled. Since XP does a decent job of managing networks we did not replace the software- we just left it removed which took care of the error.

Why did we do this? A Dell 2200 laptop was here for repair recently that had the same issue. Apparently something conflicts w/ the Broadcom software.

Overall the Presario R3000 was in great condition and had no other problems, other than Norton Antivirus had expired. To cure this we uninstalled it and popped on AVG Free.

The woman who brought in the laptop for repair had found out about us via our blog.In case she is reading: Thanks Beth, hope the computer is running well! =)

No jail for virus writer

July 8, 2005, Verden, Germany, The teen creator of the Sasser internet worm, Sven Jaschan, gets community service.

The Sasser worm supposedly caused "millions of dollars in damage worldwide." Supposedly he avoided jail due to being caught just before his 18th B'day and also because he "acted out of a need for recognition" and not for commercial purposes.

This is also a historical event due to Microsoft's reward/bounty- the first one paid out. MS rewarded $250,000 to be split between two people who had helped identify Jaschan.

Do viruses and worms really cost us millions of dollars? Some people say yes, some say no. They have never costed me a penny. The way I see it, good and bad programs must both exist in order for technology to advance the way that it does.

There will always be people saying that a virus has ruined their life or cost them millions of dollars and that the person that wrote the virus should be thrown in jail. And I understand where they are coming from, but, they also need to understand where the virus writers are coming from. You have to look at the whole picture and both points of view.

All in all if a security hole is there it is better to find out sooner than later. It allows for better, more secure, more advanced programs.

Well since this is primarilry a laptop repair blog I will end this rant rather than keep going. Must got back to work. =)

Another HP Pavillion ZE1210: Multiple problems

Two ZE1210 laptops for repair in one day. Not a good day for HP Pavilions. This laptop came in with multiple problems.

The owner said the screen went out and the laptop was then attached to a CRT monitor. Then the power jack broke and the power cord had to be held in a certain spot. Later on the laptop started shutting down every ten minutes. It was not a healthy unit. The owner had just had a ThinkPad 600E in here for repair and was very happy with the service and decided to bring this one in to see if it was worth fixing.

After some surgery the laptop is up an running again. The LCD had quit displaying because the inverter failed. The DC jack was replaced with a new one. The shut down problem was heat related- the exhaust vents needed to be cleaned- they had been clogged with clumps of dust and the unit was overheating.

HP Pavillion ZE1210: Broken power jack

An HP Pavillion ZE1210 came in last week with a broken power jack. This is common and we work on HPs w/ broken jacks daily. We're just wrapping this one up right now. The DC jack has been replaced and soldered to the motherboard.

IBM ThinkPad A31 2652-M5U: No Display

An IBM ThinkPad A31 2652-M5U came in for repair this week. It had no display. A31 laptops can be tricky. Sometimes no display is caused by the system board, LCD cable, LCD Inverter, bad backlight or a bad LCD.

This one needed a new LCD cable.

Odd ThinkPad T22: 2647-3EU

An odd ThinkPad T22 came in today. This one was configured from the factory with an 800Mhz CPU & a 13.3" LCD rather than the normal 900Mhz w/ 14.1" LCD.

IBM Type # 2647-3EU

We have seen them before but they're rare.

This one has a cracked LCD. We will be upgrading the unit to a 14" lid assembly since those are in stock and the smaller LCD is hard to find, thus more expensive.

More for less. Everyone wins.

ThinkPad T30 2366-82U: Cracked LCD

Another ThinkPad T30 came in w/ a cracked LCD - this one is a 2366-82U.

This one belongs to a church & it was damaged in shipping. The shipping company is NOT going to cover it. WOW. We're giving them a decent deal on a replacement.

Dimension 4700 - Bad Hard Drive

We have a Dimension 4700 desktop for repair here. Of course there is a cheap Maxtor Hard Drive in it that has failed- something we see often.

The hard drive was using NTFS partitions and the partition table was corrupted. The unit was here for a few days but eventually we recovered most of our customer's data, including their valuable pictures and documents.

Sony Vaio PCG-551L Repair

A Sony Vaio PCG-551L laptop came in for repair yesterday- it has been diagnosed with a bad hard drive. The hard drives for these are in stock and the unit will be leaving here shortly.

HP ZD7000

An HP ZD7000 laptop caame in today with a broken power jack. It is surprising to see HP is still selling laptops with poor power jacks.

We just bumped into a website all about the ZD7000 here: http://www.zd7000forums.com/

Below is an imae of what this laptop looks like. (if blogger will display it- acting up right now)

Fourth of July in Raleigh, NC

Well we are back open and back to blogging after a quick Fourth of July break here in Raleigh, NC.
