DV9000, with known flaw, not covered because out of the extra 12mo "service enhancement".

DV9000
p/n:EZ453UA
Motherboard: 436450-001
DV9010US

We spoke to HP "Case Managers" at 1-877-917-4380 x94. They said HP will NOT be covering any of the laptops that shipped with the defective chips after they have been out of the "service enhancement" period.

The Nvidia chip in the DV9000 (EZ453UA)s go bad after being used X amount of hours. So if you've lightly used your DV9000 and now it breaks, HP is not going to cover it.

Finally we got a machine in that IS covered. It was originally sold Jun22 2007 which means HP will cover it til Jun22 2009.

This one was over the "24mo" period HP is fixing them for. So they know it is their fault but they still will not fix it.

This was a recall unit, but the unit was lightly used, so it didn't fail until the warranty expired.

The rep told us the warranty expired under 14days ago and that they could fix it but it would cost hundreds of dollars.

DV2000 not covered:

DV2000
P/N: RP412UA (DV2214US)
Motherboard: *see below
Problem: Bad GPU

Note: This unit's warranty ended July 05, 2008, which would make the extended Nvidia warranty valid until July 05, 2009. Today, June 11, 2009, we placed multiple calls to HP and they told us they will NOT fix this machine under any circumstances because the warranty expired in March. We informed them that on THEIR website it stated July and they told us that the warranty data was wrong and they would not honor the warranty.

Our customer is trying to obtain their original invoice right now.

* Note 2: The motherboard was not labeled with a p/n but according to HP's site the model used either a 440768-001 or a 447805-001. (That should be correct as long as HP's site wasn't "wrong" again).

This is a follow up to the DV2000
P/N: RP412UA (DV2214US) above. A fourth call to HP cured all. We basically had to demand service, telling them that their own website proved the unit was sold July 6, 2007, meaning the original warranty ran out July 6, 2008, meaning they had to cover Nvidia issues until July 6, 2009. When they tried to tell us their database said it expired in March we told them their database was wrong and that we demanded service. Suddenly the rep changed her tune and said she had updated her database to contain the correct information and that she'd overnight a box to us for a free repair.

So, this unit that was supposed to be covered, has now been covered. If anything changes, we'll update it here.

This is an odd one as the board appears to be used in the DV6000. Maybe it has already been replaced before. HP doesn't list a board for the EZ345AV so we're not sure.

These units have been coming in almost daily, we've just been tired of blogging them.

Although the project is on a back burner, we are looking into possible repair solutions for these plagued models.

Inadequate thermal cooling seems to be a role here.
